Introduction to MRI Scanning: Safety and Protocols for Participants
Welcome to the Colorado State University Human MRI Research facility at the Translational Medicine Institute. We appreciate your participation in our research studies and want to ensure you feel comfortable and informed about the MRI process.
What is MRI? Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a safe and non-invasive technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to produce detailed images of the inside of your body, particularly the brain. These images help researchers and medical professionals understand various aspects of human health, cognition, and neurological conditions.
Safety Information Your safety is our top priority. MRI does not use ionizing radiation (like X-rays), making it a low-risk procedure for most individuals. However, due to the powerful magnetic field, it’s important to follow certain safety guidelines:
- Metal Objects: Before the scan, you’ll be asked to remove all metallic items such as jewelry, watches, eyeglasses, and belts. Metal can interfere with the magnetic field and affect image quality or pose safety risks.
- Medical Implants and Devices: Please inform our staff if you have any medical implants (e.g., pacemakers, cochlear implants, metal clips) or have worked with metal fragments. Some implants may not be compatible with MRI scanners.
- Clothing: We will provide you with comfortable, MRI-safe clothing to wear during the scan to ensure no hidden metal objects are present.
- Pregnancy: If you are pregnant or think you might be, please notify our staff. While MRI is generally considered safe during pregnancy, we take extra precautions to protect you and your baby.
What to Expect During the Scan
- Preparation: Our trained technicians will guide you through the process, answering any questions you may have before the scan begins.
- Positioning: You will lie comfortably on a padded table that slides into the MRI machine. We will ensure you are properly positioned and as comfortable as possible before starting.
- During the Scan: The machine makes loud tapping and humming noises during operation. You’ll be provided with earplugs or headphones to reduce noise and may have the option to listen to music.
- Stillness: To obtain clear images, it’s important to remain as still as possible throughout the scan. The technician will inform you of the duration and when it’s okay to move between sequences.
- Communication: You’ll be in constant communication with the MRI technician via an intercom system. An emergency call button will also be provided if you need immediate assistance.
- Duration: The length of the scan can vary depending on the study but typically ranges from 45 minutes to 2 hours.
- After the Scan: Once complete, you can resume your normal activities immediately. If any follow-up is needed, our staff will inform you accordingly.
Protocols and Guidelines
- Arrival: Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to allow time for check-in and preparation.
- Health Screening: You’ll be asked to complete a safety questionnaire regarding your medical history and potential contraindications for MRI.
- Consent: Informed consent will be obtained before the procedure, ensuring you understand the purpose, procedures, and any potential risks involved in the study.
- Confidentiality: All information and images obtained during the study will be kept confidential and used solely for research purposes as outlined in the consent form.
Your Comfort and Support We strive to make your experience as comfortable and stress-free as possible. If you have any concerns, anxiety, or special needs, please let our staff know, and we will do our best to accommodate you.
Thank You Your participation is invaluable in advancing our understanding of the human brain and contributing to important scientific and medical discoveries. Thank you for being a part of our research community!
